The people are showing up. The government isn't.
Five days after twin earthquakes devastated Venezuela, ordinary citizens are still doing the work that the state won't. Volunteers arrived at collapse sites in La Guaira carrying their own shovels. Civilians from Caracas drove through the night with supplies. International rescue teams from Mexico, the US, France and El Salvador are climbing through rubble alongside them.
Meanwhile, aid has been confiscated by authorities. Access to the hardest-hit areas was restricted to "authorised personnel." At one site, government officials took selfies in front of flattened buildings — then left without helping.
María Corina Machado, Venezuela's Nobel Peace Prize-winning opposition leader, is trying to return from exile to help her people. Senior US officials are reportedly blocking the move over geopolitical concerns.
A country in ruins. A government more concerned with optics than rescue. A people left to dig out their neighbours with their bare hands.
